When my 2nd twin daughter was 1 year and 6 months, she was very quiet and always laying on the floor doing nothing. At first, I thought she is such a good girl and an angel sent from heaven. Then I got worried and started calling her but no response from her. I told my husband about it, so we took her to see a paediatrician (child doctor). After her check up, the doctor said that she's a healthy girl and we told her about our worries, so she told us that some children take a longer period of time to talk and response and ask us to wait until she's 2 years old. At first we thought of waiting but we decided to get second opinion from the hospital. The doctor said to wait again but we insist a thorough check up on her hearing and etc. So we sent her to do a hearing test and the result turned out, no problem.
My husband heard of autism before but to me it was the first time that I've heard this word and how serious it is. We check through the Internet for the word "autism" and its' symptoms and found it's similarity to our daughter's behaviour. I started to search for books that I could purchase to use it as a guide for me to do homeschooling with her and I found the Amazon site and purchased some books from them through Internet. The books I found to be helpful and highly recommend it are as follows:
a) Behavioral Intervention for Young Children with Autism by Catherine Maurice (ISBN: 0890796831);
Comment - this book helps me to guide my daughter to talk and have good living and self-help skills..
b) A Work In Progress by Ron Leaf & John McEachin (ISBN: 0-9665266-0-0); and
Comment - this book gives me ideas and strategies to deal with challenging behaviours.
c) Let me hear your voice by Catherine Maurice (ISBN:0-449-90664-7).
Comment - this book is the first book that I've read with eagerness to find out the outcome on the efforts and methods used by Catherine on her son and I've found it to be a good reading material and learning through her experience. I've used all the methods that she went through using my own improvised versions.
After knowing about this 'Autism', we sent her to see a child psychologist, spent an hour there, all she did was taking notes on our observation of our daughter's behaviour and she let her played with some puzzles which she have never played before and finds it difficult. There and then she conclude that she's autistic and ask us to sent her to a kindergarten as soon as possible. And all that consultation cost us RM 600 for an hour. We decided also there and then that we will not be sending her there again for follow-up, we also decided not to label her and start teaching her. With those books as my guide and purchased alot of educational toys, drawing materials and flash cards to help me in my process of teaching.
